Ashville exited the FA Vase following a 2-1 home defeat to Wombwell Town in Round 2

The Wallasey club were one of only two remaining Merseyside clubs left in the competition but couldn’t find a way to progress against Wombwell Town from West Yorkshire.

The home side had the better of the early chances but were thwarted by Charlie Preston in goal before finding themselves a goal down after half an hour. Gavin Allott had too much time on the ball and crossed for Jordan Kershaw to send a looping header into the top corner.

It would take Villa until first half stoppage time to find an equaliser when Peter Morgan touched home following Preston’s parried save from a Lewis Moynes shot.

The visitors started the second half the better side and got their rewards on 65 minutes when Jack Dando headed in from a corner.

8 minutes later however Wombwell were down to ten as Jack Wilson was sent off for a reckless challenge on Josh Maldon.

Villa piled the pressure on in the closing stages and had the ball in the back of the net deep into added time. The goal was ruled out however for a foul on Preston in the build up by stand in Villa keeper, Ruari McDaid.

It marks the end of Ashville’s Wembley dreams for another season but they will look to bounce back in another cup, the Edward Case Cup, on Tuesday night when Barnton visit Ray Parker Stadium, Kick off 7:45pm
