Ashville bounced back from Saturday’s heartbreaking FA Vase defeat by progressing to the Edward Case Cup quarter finals with a 2-1 home victory over Barnton
Two goals in two minutes in the first half was enough to seal Villa’s progression into the latter stages of the competition with Tom Hewlett and Mark Madden getting on the scoresheet
It was Hewlett who broke the deadlock on 31 minutes when he received a brilliant cross from Connor Courtnell before bending a shot around a defender and into the bottom corner leaving Ryan Bopda stranded
In the blink of an eye Villa had doubled their advantage. Madden was the man who was fouled just inside the area before he stepped up and sent Bopda the wrong way to give the home side a comfortable lead in a first half they dominated.
Barnton flipped the games momentum on its head in the second half and got their reward on the hour mark when a contentious penalty was awarded to the visitors. Joe Levey stepped up and fired the spot kick home to half the deficit and set up a tense and exciting final half an hour
Tried as they might, Barnton just couldn’t force an equaliser and a steely and determined Ashville defence closed out the game to seal their progress into the quarter finals where they will face Euxton Villa at home.
Ashville will hope to continue the momentum from this victory in Saturday’s home league fixture against Sandbach United. Kick off 3pm
